Fern with an erect rhizome and tuffed fronds. The fronds are 2-pinnatifid and proliferous towards the apex; stipe and rachis pubescent. The lamina (950 x 120mm) is narrowly lanceolate in outline with pinnae that are incised 2/3 of the way to the midrib. Linear sori are set at about 15 degrees to the midrib, indusium entire.
Ecology: Mostly lithophytic on mossy boulders along deeply shaded streambanks in evergreen forest, 1000-2000m (drops to 100m in Transkei & Natal)
Derivation of the specific name: protensum: extended, referring to the long, narrow fronds
Distribution in southern Africa: Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa
