Syn: Ceterach cordatum (Thunb.) Desv.

Photos:
This fern has an erect rhizome with tuffed fronds. The lamina (25-240 x 9-85mm) is pinnate and oblanceolate in outline. The pinnae have crenate margins, a rounded apex and a more or less deeply notched base. Their undersurface is densely covered with pale brown, overlapping scales. Stipe & rachis are also covered with scales. The linear sori are hardly visible because of the covering scales.
Ecology: Terrestrial or lithophytic in rock crevices or beneath boulders, sheltered from sun & wind, 50-2900m
Derivation of the specific name: cordatum: heart-shaped, referring to the two basal lobes of the pinna
Distribution in southern Africa: Lesotho, South Africa, Zimbabwe
