 This fern has an erect rhizome with uniform, tuffed fronds that are gemmiferous towards the base of the apical pinna. The lamina (up to 800x 170mm) is pinnate with 13 to 28 pairs of pinnae and lanceolate in outline. The pinnae have an asymmetrical base and margins that are irregurly incised into bilobed teeth . The linear to oval sori are set along the veins at 30 degrees to the costa, indusium entire.
Ecology: Dense shade along streams in evergreen forest, 900-1980m
Derivation of the specific name: boltonii: type specimen was collected by General D. Bolton in Natal
