 This species has an ercet rhizome with tuffed, not proliferous fronds. The lamina (250x170mm) is pinnate and oblong in outline. The lamina is more than 60mm wide and has  3-6 pairs of pinnae plus a terminal pinna similar to the other pinnae. The pinnae are glabrous, have shallowly crenate margins and an unequally cuneate base. Linaer sori are set along the veins at 50 degrees to the costa, indusium entire.
Ecology: Very deep shade on forest floor away from water, up to 1600m
Derivation of the specific name: atroviride: dark green, referring to the colour of the fronds
Distribution in southern Africa: Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi
