Star Stinkhorn
Inedible
A conspicuous and striking
species, growing in leaf litter on the forest floor of evergreen forest and
exotic pine plantations. The unpleasant smell attracts flies which aid the
dispersal of spores, which are situated in a sticky black mass in the centre of
the disc. It is short-lived, usually lasting no more than a few hours. It could
be confused with Clathrus archeri, which has long, fleshy, unbranched arms and has
the black spores not in a central mass but scattered along the arms.
